It All Started on Isla Mujeres
Do you need another tote? Technically, no. But there’s a brunch next weekend, a wedding around the corner, maybe even a date—and how perfectly cute would this look with your outfit?
The idea for these handheld straw totes began on a birthday girls’ trip to Isla Mujeres. While my best friend (the chatty one—we all have one) was deep in conversation with her scuba instructor, I wandered off and found myself in a tiny shop filled with bright, joyful souvenirs and handwoven beach totes.
The color combos were bold, a little wild—but somehow just right. They had that effortless charm you rarely see anymore. The kind of piece that makes you feel like you’re already on vacation.
From WhatsApp to a Creative Partnership
I asked the teenager behind the counter where they came from. “My mom makes them,” he said, handing me a wrinkled business card. “Text me on WhatsApp.” I figured I’d never hear back—but I did.
That one message sparked what would become an ongoing partnership. What started with a few texts turned into a creative collaboration rooted in trust, slow fashion values, and a shared appreciation for artisan-made goods.
Why We Love Small-Batch, Artisan-Made Accessories
Over the next few months (and now years), that one connection grew into a collaboration that has evolved into seasonal styles, signature color combos, and a shared love of handcrafted, thoughtfully and sustainably made accessories.
At Per Lei New York, these aren’t just beach totes. They’re outfit-makers, mood-lifters, and mini escape plans. Not accessories you need—but definitely something you’ll want to carry again and again.

Final Thoughts
These baskets mean more to me than just something cute to carry. They represent connection, craft, and the kind of slow, intentional fashion I want to keep putting into the world. Each one tells a story—from a tiny shop in Mexico to the hands of an artisan, to your weekend plans.
Whether you're packing one for a beach day or just heading out for coffee, I hope it brings you the same joy it brought me when I first found it.
With love,
Rebecca
